Art promotion activities

We will initiate creative actions and aesthetics education across the 38 administrative districts of Kaohsiung under the theme “Listening to Secret Crystals.” This initiative aims to guide people in weaving oceanic music that belongs to their own land in diverse forms. We will invite professionals in fields such as literature and history, ecology, sound composition, environmental art, music composition, dance, and more. The primary target groups will include local cultural institutions and school units.
Through activities such as field surveys, workshops, and lectures, we will promote the project’s concept and the distinctive features of the Kaohsiung Pop Music Center. By engaging in dialogue with various local communities, we aim to expand people’s diverse understanding of oceanic island culture, particularly in relation to environmental issues, ethnicities, species, and migration.

Sea Bass and Eel Keywords – Printmaking Workshop

The transformation of daily activities in Yancheng District into performance material involves the active participation of residents in the filming of a formal video production in the Da Gou Ding neighborhood, which serves as both a record and promotional material for the complete performance.
Regular rehearsals take place within the Yancheng District Evergreen Academy and extend into the marketplace for dress rehearsals and location scouting. Through video capture, the everyday labor of businesses in the Da Gou Ding area and New Music Street is documented. This footage is then used to create audiovisual elements for the participatory performance. Interviews and documentation serve as invitations to involve residents in the project and performance, transforming their daily work into elements of the exhibition.
The collected footage from the field and the inclusion of residents in warm-up performances result in a blend of everyday life and improvisational storefront exhibitions. With the aid of photographic documentation, each performance is layered and simultaneously presented in the district, creating a collective memory and visual residue.

Time Flow and Flag-raising Workshop

Time is perceived differently by people of different ages. Older individuals may feel that it’s the same routine day after day, while children may perceive it as constantly new and fresh. However, for everyone, a day consists of 24 hours, with each hour containing 60 minutes. Therefore, the concept of “Time Flow” involves using sound to count from 1 to 60, allowing the counter to feel the passage of time by counting, moving counterclockwise, and walking in a circular pattern.
On the other hand, “Flag-raising” is a response to the moments when flags are waved between temples in Taiwan. Using the gentle waving of fabric, it brings out the extension of the body, combining a ritualistic state to showcase two different aspects of life: stability and exuberance. These performances occur in everyday life when we become aware of adjusting our posture and slowing down our movements. What seems like a routine activity becomes a focused performance, allowing breath to guide the body and seamlessly integrating into post-workout stretching, making daily life and warm-ups part of an improvised performance.

Coastline Project Workshop

The “Coastline Project Workshop” uses visual, auditory, and artistic methods to document the boundaries between land and sea, exploring the true distance between the sea and our everyday lives. The workshop invites the public to use the coastal sounds collected through listening to connect the coastal landscapes of four areas: Zigoan, Mituo, Qieding, and Yong’an, through painting and collage. This process reconstructs an imaginary land-sea boundary, allowing imagination to extend into the unseen space.
By deconstructing and seamlessly merging the familiar and invisible coastal landscapes through images, it creates a new landscape that exists between reality and imagination, between limitation and infinity, and between nature and artificial constructs.

Slow-Moving – Workshop on Vegetables Not Found in Chain Stores

Under the nourishment of the land, there are many thriving life forms coexisting with us. We hope that through slow and deliberate movement, we can observe things that are both familiar and yet unknown, the mysteries that can only be discovered through unhurried exploration.
This project combines locally sourced ingredients from conscientious small-scale farmers with environmental ingredients to create new possibilities. Field reconnaissance is a form of bodily observation and movement in the environment. The environment evolves over time, with things around us constantly changing. The cycle of life and death unfolds continuously in our surroundings. For example, the dragon fruit under streetlights or the wild amaranth under roadside trees may naturally wither or be cleared away by street cleaners within a few months. However, these plants are actually delicious ingredients.
We hope to invite interested friends to explore the natural forces thriving in the urban jungle around us. While walking, we can contemplate why basic survival skills are not taught in our educational backgrounds, creating a noticeable absence. We can also discuss topics such as why indigenous communities have a sensitivity to the environment that can be passed down through generations.

Contact Improvisation Dance Workshop

Contact improvisation is a form of dance that focuses on body perception and movement. It combines ‘contact’ and ‘improvisation’ to create numerous combinations of bodies interacting with each other. In the process of ‘contact,’ it attempts to read the messages that bodies exchange through endless physical contact, awakening awareness and sensations in every inch of the body’s muscles and skin.
It involves observing the inaccuracy of dancing with partners, reflecting on the understanding of oneself in the present moment of dance. Bodies overlap, roll, compress, and pull in this most authentic sense of bodily awareness. They respond to each other’s movements, like a strategic dance of actions and reactions. It’s a fearless collaboration with partners to create the next dance step, and it enables an ongoing dialogue within the body.”

Lecture on Pop Music and Ballads

Two lectures featuring music artist Wang Yu-Jun discussing contemporary folk songs. In recent years, Yu-Jun has been particularly focused on the inner auditory spaces created by sound, body, and visuals, as well as the musical landscapes within the crevices of poetry.
“The charm of folk songs lies in their ability to be neither entirely new nor old, yet they encapsulate people’s most direct emotions in a single song. Exploring the possibilities of contemporary new folk songs from various perspectives, including language, melody, lyrics, and rhythm, influenced by different cultures such as Japan, the United States, and the South Seas, reveals the traces of the times.

Ocean Music Lecture

Initiated by the founder of ‘Small Island Big Song,’ Chen Wen-Zen shares his experiences of traversing the seas and interacting with musicians from various island nations. Together, they have created a contemporary South Island music experience, infusing rich and profound oceanic music into public art events centered around maritime culture and popular music.
Starting in 2014, Chen Wen-Zen and Australian music producer Tim Cole embarked on a mission to connect South Island cultures through music. Over three years, they visited over a hundred musicians from sixteen island nations. These musicians selected songs they wished to record and performed them in their native languages or with traditional instruments. Recordings and filming took place in unique natural environments. The songs then traveled to another island, where additional South Island musicians incorporated local elements. Layer by layer, they wove together eighteen songs, each collaboratively created by musicians ranging from one to hundreds. ‘Small Island Big Song’ became the first international music project spanning sixteen South Island nations and received numerous prestigious music awards worldwide upon the release of its album in 2018.

“Our Beautiful Island, the warm embrace of our mother…”Beautiful Island is an important interchange station on the Kaohsiung MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) system, and it’s also the name of a magazine, signifying its crucial role in the era of Taiwan’s pro-democracy movement. Beautiful Island is also the title of a song that, after enduring years of censorship and bans, has become a well-known and beloved tune. In this lecture, hosted by Mr. Li Lu, who currently hosts the “Golden Melodies Rhythm” program on Central Broadcasting System Radio, we will start with Beautiful Island and delve into the topics of poetry, cultural movements, and Taiwan’s journey towards democracy, rule of law, and human rights during a time of significant change and upheaval.
